The United Nations have long taken it upon itself to advocate for those who have no voices or are often not heard. International Universal Health Coverage Day promotes making affordable healthcare accessible to everyone. They started this holiday to advance the idea that all humans have the right to healthcare. It’s a call for all nations to support their citizens equally and leave no one behind as healthcare is a basic human right.
This holiday was proclaimed in 2017 and is observed annually on December 12. Their partners are the World Health Organization (WHO), The Rockefeller Foundation, Oxfam, World Bank Group, and Save the Children. This is only one of the United Nations’ projects that aim to advance human rights.
Universal health coverage was included in the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015. The Sustainable Development Goals or Global Goals are 17 goals that help create a “more sustainable future for all.” These goals were set up in 2015 and are intended to be achieved by 2030. They include No Poverty, Zero Hunger, Good Health and Well-being, Quality Education, Gender Equality, Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, Decent Work and Economic Growth, Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, Reduced Inequality, Sustainable Cities and Communities, Responsible Consumption and Production, Climate Action, Life Below Water, Life on Land, Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, and Partnerships for the Goals.
